This past week, I read about how working moms are leaving the U.S. workforce in record numbers.
Not because they’ve lost ambition.
Not because they’ve stopped caring about their careers.
But because the MothHERload has become too heavy to carry alone.
The New Pressures on Mothers
For many of us, the challenges aren’t new—just intensified:
Childcare costs are higher than some monthly mortgages.
Return-to-office mandates erase the flexibility that once allowed us to balance work and family.
Inflation means groceries, gas, and basics stretch our budgets further than ever.
And yet, even as we juggle more, we still face the quiet question: “Can you really do it all?”
Why the MothHERload Feels Heavier Than Ever
The truth is, the MothHERload was never just about chores and logistics.
It’s the mental tabs we keep open:
Who’s covering pickup if a meeting runs late?
Did I sign the school permission slip?
Can I afford that summer program without cutting something else?
Now add external pressures—policies that pull us back into offices, childcare bills that rise faster than our paychecks—and the invisible load becomes impossible to ignore.
A Different Kind of Decision
This week, I’ve been reflecting on a simple but tough question:
👉 If I can’t carry everything, what will I choose to carry?
Because the truth is, something will give. The decision is whether we let the system decide for us—or we choose intentionally.
For me, that looks like:
1️⃣ Prioritizing presence over perfection at home.
2️⃣ Advocating for flexibility at work, not apologizing for needing it.
3️⃣ Saying no to one “extra” responsibility so I can say yes to breathing room.
Closing Thought
The MothHERload isn’t just personal—it’s systemic. And until policies and workplaces catch up, women will continue making impossible choices.
But here’s the reminder I keep coming back to: we are not alone in this.
Every small decision to set something down, to advocate, to support another mom, is part of lightening the load—for ourselves and for the women who will come after us.
💬 Your Turn: What’s one decision you’re making this week to lighten your MothHERload?
