Rest Anyway
July 27, 2026
Lately...
I've been thinking about a different kind of tired.
Not the kind that sleep fixes.
The other kind.
The kind that settles somewhere beneath your ribs.
The kind that follows you into your weekends.
The kind that sits beside you on the vacation you finally took and whispers...
"You should probably be doing something."
I know that tired.
Maybe you do too.
For the longest time, I thought it was just part of becoming successful.
Part of caring deeply.
Part of loving my family well.
Part of building something meaningful.
I wore it like a badge of honor.
If I was exhausted...
it must mean I was giving everything I had.
And somewhere along the way...
I started believing that rest was something you earned.
You rested after the work was finished.
After the house was clean.
After the inbox hit zero.
After the kids were older.
After the business was stable.
After everyone else was okay.
Always...
after.
The problem is...
there is always another "after."
Another email.
Another meeting.
Another opportunity.
Another responsibility.
Another reason to keep going.
I've learned something about women.
We become incredibly good at carrying things.
Responsibilities.
Expectations.
Schedules.
Worries.
Other people's emotions.
Dreams.
Disappointments.
Sometimes...
we carry so much for so long that we forget what it feels like to put anything down.
I don't know exactly when that happened to me.
I just know one day I realized I couldn't remember the last time I rested without feeling guilty.
Not because someone else expected something from me.
Because I expected everything from myself.
That realization stopped me.
Because I began wondering...
What if exhaustion isn't proof that I'm living with purpose?
What if it's proof that I've forgotten something?
Maybe we've confused being needed...
with being valuable.
Maybe we've confused being busy...
with being faithful.
Maybe we've confused constantly producing...
with actually living.
The older I get...
the more I believe rest isn't just about sleep.
It's about release.
It's about letting go of things that were never ours to carry forever.
It's about remembering that who we are matters more than what we accomplish.
It's about realizing we don't have to control every outcome.
It's about trusting that the things we're building won't fall apart because we finally took a breath.
I'm still learning that.
Some days I'm better at it than others.
Some days I close the laptop.
Some days I don't.
Some days I protect time with my family without feeling guilty.
Some days my mind is still writing tomorrow's to-do list while I'm sitting in today's memories.
Growth rarely happens all at once.
But I'm learning.
Slowly.
That purpose doesn't require exhaustion to prove it's real.
That sentence has changed something in me.
Because if my purpose only survives when I'm constantly running...
maybe what I'm protecting isn't purpose at all.
Maybe it's performance.
And I don't want to spend my life performing.
I want to spend my life present.
Present for my husband.
Present for Aubrie.
Present for the women I'm called to serve.
Present enough to notice the sunsets.
The laughter.
The quiet conversations.
The ordinary moments that become extraordinary because I was actually there.
I'm beginning to believe something I wish I'd understood years ago.
Rest isn't what happens after you've finally done enough.
Rest is what reminds you...
you were never loved because you did enough in the first place.
So if you're tired today...
Not sleepy.
Soul tired.
I hope you'll remember this.
The world will always find another reason for you to keep running.
It rarely tells you when it's okay to stop.
Maybe that's because...
it was never the world's permission you needed.
Maybe it was your own.
Rest anyway.
That's part of my Herformation.
And maybe...
yours too.
