The Meeting Where I Didn’t Speak First. And Won the Room

August 13, 2025

In my early leadership days, I thought my value was tied to how quickly I could respond. Jump into a discussion. Offer a solution. Be the first voice in the room.

But I’ve learned something that’s completely shifted my approach: Sometimes the most powerful thing a leader can do is wait.

The Power of the Pause

Last week, in a project meeting, I knew the topic would be contentious. People had strong opinions, tight deadlines, and a lot at stake.

My instinct was to lead with my perspective set the tone. Instead, I decided to listen.

I asked the opening question, then stayed quiet. I watched the dynamics. I listened for what wasn’t being said as much as for the words that were.

After 15 minutes, patterns emerged:

Two people agreed but thought they were in conflict

One person had a workable solution but didn’t feel confident sharing

The loudest voice in the room was steering us off course

When I finally spoke, I connected the dots, gave space to the quieter idea, and reframed the discussion. By the end, we had a plan everyone supported, and it wasn’t even mine.

Why This Works in LeadHERship

Listening isn’t passive. It’s strategic.

Here’s what the pause can do for you: 1️⃣ Build trust: People feel heard when they’re not interrupted. 2️⃣ Reveal blind spots: The real obstacles often come from what’s left unsaid. 3️⃣ Increase influence: When you speak less, your words carry more weight. 4️⃣ Empower others: A good leader creates space for others to shine. 5️⃣ Make better decisions: Input from multiple perspectives leads to stronger outcomes.

The Leadership Shift

LeadHERship is about more than having the answers, it’s about creating the environment where the best answers emerge.

And sometimes, the best way to lead is to speak last.

Your Turn: Have you ever held back in a meeting and seen a better outcome because of it? Share your story in the comments, I’d love to hear how the pause has worked for you.
