MothHERload: The Labor of Love in Motherhood (And Who Carries Me)

September 1, 2025

The other day, someone asked me a question that stopped me cold: “Who takes care of you while you take care of everyone else?”

For a moment, I didn’t have an answer. I felt that familiar ache rise up, because most days, it feels like I carry the world while no one carries me.

But as I sat with the question, something shifted.

A Quiet Realization

When I really reflected, I realized God has sent me people, some close, some unexpected, who show up when I forget to care for myself.

The friend who checks in just to say, “How are you, really?”

The colleague who covers for me so I can make my daughter’s pickup.

The neighbor who waves, who notices, who reminds me I’m not invisible.

My child herself, who with one unprompted hug teaches me that love flows back, too.

I realized I am never truly carrying the MothHERload alone. The weight is real, but so is the help.

The Labor of Love

Motherhood is often described as a “labor of love,” and it is. But it’s also a shared labor, whether we see it or not.

We may feel like the anchor for our families, but anchors don’t hold without a chain. And sometimes, the chain is built of small gestures, unexpected kindness, or the people God places in our path to remind us: we are seen, we are supported, we are not alone.

This Labor Day

As we honor the work that built our country, I also want to honor the labor of motherhood, and the community that makes it possible.

Because while mothers often carry the heaviest load, no one was meant to carry it all alone.

Closing Thought

To every mom who feels like the weight is all on you: Take a moment today to notice the people who help you carry it, even in small ways.

And if you can’t think of anyone yet, trust that those people are coming. Because God never meant for you to walk this road alone.

💬 Your Turn: Who’s one person, big or small, who helps carry your load?
